tonometry

Tonometry is the measurement of the internal pressure of the eyeball, known as intraocular pressure.
Variations in intraocular pressure are due to aqueous humor, a fluid that exists between the iris and cornea, consisting of water and salts, which is continually produced and eliminated by the body. It is the amount of this fluid that measures intraocular pressure values.
If there is an imbalance in the aqueous humor production/elimination mechanism, intraocular pressure will vary, generally increasing.
Tonometry should be performed regularly on all patients, but especially on patients over 50 years of age , patients with a family history of high intraocular pressure and glaucoma , and patients with other associated ocular pathologies.
Higher and continuously high values ββof intraocular pressure (around the maximum limit of 21 mmHg) can cause damage to the optic nerve, namely glaucoma.
As such, prophylactic measurement of intraocular pressure is extremely important for the prevention and detection of ocular pathologies.
